The Bible Gives A true Account Of The World

The biblical authors were dealing with the same issues that confront us – issues of faith and understanding that do not fade in a thousand years or in ten thousand.
Who is God?
What kind of world has God made?
Who are we, human spirits and souls and bodies, who find ourselves in this world?
What are the limits of our existence and our power,
And what lies beyond them?
Why is suffering a part of our lives?
Why does this world not measure up to the best that we might hope of it?
And why does it give us so much more than we could have asked?
The mysteries of our existence remain with us.

The Christian claim about the scriptures is that in them we hear the word of God.
That means that, like all inspired works, the Bible gives a true account of the world.
It need not be scientifically true, in detail, nor even historically accurate.
But it must be true in the larger sense that it calls to our attention those things which are most significant in our universe and places them in a meaningful perspective.
No matter how badly we interpret it or how little we expect of it, it will not lose the ability to break through to the mind and spirit of our age, because truth cannot be kept quiet forever.
The Bible gives a fuller and truer perspective than that of any other single work.

More Men Are Dying From Skin Cancer

Death rates among men suffering the deadliest skin cancer have doubled in 30 years.
Numbers with the disease have risen dramatically among both men and women since the 1970s, a Cancer Research UK study found.
But even though more women are diagnosed with malignant melanoma, more men die from it.
In the late 1970s, fewer than 400 men died from it each year but now it is more than 1,100.
More than 10,400 cases are diagnosed each year in the UK.

Fruit Helps Ward Off Asthma And Ageing

Children who eat a Mediterranean diet rich in fruit, vegetables and fish have lower risk of asthma, scientists claim.
Researchers in Germany, Spain and England studied data from 50,000 children aged 8 to 12 from 20 countries, collected between 1995 and 2005.
They found children who ate a diet which was rich in fruit had a low rate of wheeze in both rich and poor countries.
The results appear in the Journal Thorax.

Japanese islanders the Okinawans often live to well over 100.
Their diet is packed with up to 14 different fruit and veg a day.
Bursting with antioxidants, these foods boost the immune system and fight damage that leads to premature ageing.
The Okinawans stop eating as soon as they feel full.

Politics Is Not A Game

When politicians speak, you learn more and more about less and less until you know everything about nothing.

Politics is the art of solving one problem without creating other bigger ones.

Bureaucrats are like books in a library –
The higher they are, the less useful they are.

Most schemes of political improvement are very laughable things.

Politics is not a game.
It is an earnest business.
(Winston Churchill)

The house of commons is a perfect example of what happens when a lot of troublemakers are kept together in one building.

Although 5.5 million Brits live abroad only 30,559 of them downloaded voter registration forms from the electoral commission website.
Just think of the difference that lot could have made to turnout if they had not been so busy sunning themselves.

Take A Look Inside Your Mind

It’s the thoughtless act that tears apart
The finely woven fabric of the day.
It’s the tiny straw that breaks the back
When added to the daily wear and tear.
It’s the extra feather in the sack
That makes the burden more than you can bear.

So check yourself before you say too much.
You may be right, but exercise control,
Another word could be the final touch.
The straw that breaks the over-burdened soul.

Before you blame another
Take a look inside your mind.
Search your thoughts and if you’re honest
Maybe you will find
You too made mistakes
And were not always wholly wise.

The Church Is Subject To The Bible

Men never do evil so completely and cheerfully as when they do it from religious conviction.

The Christian community is dependent on the Bible for its life and integrity.
Once Christians have accepted the Bible as embodying the word of God – the message that lies at the heart of our existence as Christians – from then onward the Bible has a certain authority over against the church.
The church must interpret the Bible so that the Bible will have a living voice in each age, but the church must not use the process of interpretation merely to justify what the church itself happens to be.
The church, as the living community of faith, will always go on changing and developing, but not every change and development will be good.
A church that breaks radically with its scriptural foundations will no longer be a community of Christian faith but something else.
The church is subject to the Bible, just as the Bible is dependent on the church.
Without the Bible, the church can only degenerate into something no thoughtful person would care to be associated with.

Love Is The Dirty Trick Played On Us

Love is about danger, always.
Love jumps off cliffs, love is irrational.
It keeps you alive and it destroys you.

Love your enemy – it’ll drive him nuts.

Love is only the dirty trick played on us to achieve continuation of the species.

Love is the delusion that one woman differs from another.

The union of the family lies in love,
And love is the only reconciliation of authority and liberty.

A man loves his sweetheart the most, his wife the best, but his mother the longest.

Love is nobody else’s business but the three people involved.

The embrace of love held too tightly destroys the one you love.

Love may not make the world go round,
But it makes the ride worthwhile.

Love your neighbour but don’t trust him.

Love your neighbour, but don’t pull down the fence.

Know you’re loved on entering and leaving this world and you can deal with anything.

To change people you must love them.
Your influence reaches only as far as your love.

Absence hinders love, presence strengthens it.

The whole worth of a kind deed lies in the love that inspires it.

Do not believe those people who say they have never been jealous.
What they mean is that they have never been in love.

Coffee And Grape Juice Prevent Disease

A daily dose of caffeine could delay the onset of Alzheimer’s and even prevent the disease.

They found it may also boost memory power.
The UK has 417,000 Alzheimer’s sufferers.

Purple grape juice can help prevent heart attacks, angina and strokes, research has revealed.

Over-45s Ignore Safe-Sex

Nurses want a safe-sex campaign aimed at over-45s after a sharp rise in sexually transmitted infections.
Cases of herpes, Chlamydia and syphilis have shot up as many older men and women fail to use condoms because they assume safe sex messages are aimed only at the young.
The most common infection among the over-45s was genital warts, with 5,198 cases in 2008 – up 33% on 2004, according to Health Protection Agency data.
Herpes cases shot up 79%, Chlamydia rose by 49% and syphilis went up by 39%.
Experts say high divorce rates and internet dating could be to blame.

Rollercoasters Can Cause Deafness

Seven out of ten people would only change their lifestyle if a heart attack or stroke forced them to act.
Six in ten insist they are healthy – even though most of us are overweight.
Only two in 10 would consider the death of a close relative from an unhealthy lifestyle as “a spur” to get fit.
The survey was carried out by Lloyds Pharmacy.

—————————————

Rollercoasters have been found to cause the same ear injuries as those sustained by soldiers exposed to bomb blasts.
The twists and turns can cause pain and temporary deafness, say scientists.
Ear Barotruama is caused by sudden changes of pressure on the ear as a ride dips, rises and twists.
It can cause dizziness, pain, popping ears and, in extreme cases, deafness.
