Animal Farmers Across The U.S. Are Changing To A More Sustainable Crop-Growing Business.
Set up in 2019, the Transfarmation Project works with farms across the U.S. that want to ditch industrial animal agriculture, which is typically done as contract work on behalf of big meat companies, and move toward a sustainable, fully independent business model.
They provide guidance on how to repurpose existing infrastructure for different crops, but also business advice on how to find the market, set up a website, establish a brand and sell directly to consumers.
They also provide research and innovation grants that can help with the finances of making the transition.
The idea is to move beyond a form of intensive farming that has a hugely detrimental impact on the environment, but also to protect the farmers themselves, many of whom find that the concentrated animal-feeding operation (Cafo) model takes a toll on their mental health.

Eating Chicken Is Linked To Eleven Different Types Of Cancer.
Regularly eating chicken could double your risk of dying from eleven different types of cancer, including bowel and stomach, a study has suggested.
While red and processed meat have been linked to an increased risk of bowel cancer, poultry had, until now, been considered a less risky source of protein.
In the study, Italian scientists analysed diet and health information of nearly 5,000 people, mostly in their 50s, over almost two decades.
They found those that consumed over 300g of poultry, equivalent to about four portions, per week, had double the risk of dying from a digestive cancer, compared to those who are less than one portion of poultry per week.
Eating more than four portions of poultry a week was also linked to a 27% chance of increased death of any cause.

Australian Bat Lyssavirus, A Deadly Disease That Can Kill Humans And Animals.
A man from northern New South Wales has died after contracting the state’s first recorded case of Australian bat lyssavirus, a close relative of the rabies virus.
The man, in his 50s, was bitten by a bat “several” months ago and received treatment at the time, NSW Health said.
The department confirmed the man had died and urged the community to avoid touching or handling bats.
Australian bat lyssavirus is an extremely rare type of lyssavirus, of which rabies is also a type.

It was first identified in May 1996 in a fruit bat in northern NSW.
The virus has been found in species of flying foxes, fruit bats and insect-eating micro-bats in Australia, and any bat in Australia could carry the virus, NSW Health said.
Humans contract the virus when bitten or scratched by a bat.

The first human case of the virus was identified in a Queensland wildlife carer in October 1996.
A second fatal human case, 27 months after a bite from a flying fox, emerged in December 1998.
A young boy died in 2012 after “unsolicited” contact with a bat, then two cases of the virus were found in horses in 2013.
There is no effective treatment for lyssavirus once symptoms have presented.
Symptoms include fever and loss of consciousness.
Once humans become infected, the virus travels slowly through nerves towards the brain.

The Backward UK Supreme Court Sides With The Dairy Industry.
The Swedish-based drinks manufacturer Oatly has been banned from using the word “milk” to market its plant-based products, after a ruling by the UK supreme court.
The alt-milk manufacturer has been in a long-running legal battle with the trade association Dairy UK after Oatly trademarked phrases associated with the dairy sector.
The supreme court unanimously ruled that Oatly can no longer trademark, or use, the slogan “Post Milk Generation”.
Despite the defeat handed down by the UK’s highest court, Oatly remained defiant, saying that the ruling was anti-competitive and not good for the British public.

Antibiotic Overuse In The Meat Industry Is Linked To Infections In Humans.
Factory farming is known to contribute to the global threat of antimicrobial-resistant bacteria.
But scientists don’t fully understand which steps in factory farming lead to resistance or how likely these resistant bacteria from food animals are to reach people and make them sick.
Two new studies help to fill these gaps.
One study from researchers at Dicle University in Turkey found that beef slaughterhouses are a reservoir of antibiotic-resistant extraintestinal pathogenic Escherichia coli (ExPEC), a strain of E. coli bacteria that is the leading cause of urinary tract infections, or UTIs.
One quarter of all workers’ hands tested positive for ExPEC, and more than half of the bacterial samples were resistant to at least one antimicrobial drug, the researchers found.
In a separate study, food animals were the likely source of 18% of antimicrobial-resistant UTIs in patients sampled in Southern California.

Overuse of antimicrobial medicines in intensive farming is among the main drivers of antimicrobial resistance, a scourge that kills 1.27 million people a year, topping deaths from HIV and malaria combined, according to the World Health Organisation.
Many more antimicrobials are sold for use in farm animals than for humans each year in high-income countries.
They are typically used to treat and prevent disease and sometimes to promote growth.
The more antimicrobial medicines are used, the more chances bacteria and other pathogenic organisms like fungi and viruses have to evolve resistance to the drugs.
Veterinary scientists and animal welfare advocates worry that overusing antimicrobials in farm animals is used to compensate for poor husbandry.

The Meat Industry Is Accused Of Paying People To Discredit Veganism Online.
An anonymous person has claimed that the meat industry paid them and others to discredit veganism online.
The person revealed this information within an “Ask Me Anything” (AMA) post, effectively a virtual, real-time Q-and-A – on Reddit at the end of November 2025.
The anonymous person said that an unspecified U.S.-based meat industry trade group paid them $17 per hour for a year to “go on sites” and “discredit veganism.”
They claimed that the meat industry group employed them and others to do this work for a year.
They said that those hired for the work would make multiple accounts and “pretend to be vegans who had bad health outcomes,” or pretend to be vegans to “push the vegan subs to be more extreme and therefore easier to discredit.”

Scientists Issue Urgent Warning About Chemicals In The Food System That Cause Cancer And Infertility.
Scientists have issued an urgent warning that some of the synthetic chemicals that help underpin the current food system are driving increased rates of cancer, neurodevelopmental conditions and infertility, while degrading the foundations of global agriculture.
The health burden from phthalates, bisphenols, pesticides and Pfas “forever chemicals” amounts to up to $2.2trillion a year, roughly as much as the profits of the world’s 100 largest publicly listed companies.

Most ecosystem damage remains unpriced, they say, but even a narrow accounting of ecological impacts, taking into account agricultural losses and meeting water safety standards for Pfas and pesticides, implies a further cost of $640billion.
There are also potential consequences for human demographics, with the report concluding that if exposure to endocrine disruptors such as bisphenols and phthalates persists at current rates, there could be between 200 million and 700 million fewer births between 2025 and 2100.

A Possible Link Between Weight Loss Injections And Gallbladder Problems.
The number of gallbladder surgeries recorded by NHS England in 2024-25 was at its highest peak in the past decade.
The president of the British Obesity and Metabolic Specialist Society, Ahmed Ahmed, said he was doing more of these operations with “more and more” people telling him they had taken weight loss injections.
Gallstones are listed as a common side effect of the jabs and the UK’s official medical licensing body said they were kept under “continual review”.
The Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) updated its guidance on GLP-1 injections regarding the risk of acute pancreatitis, which is often linked to gallstones.
