I understand the distinction between dreams and life, while yet conceding that a good metaphysics can confound it.
But the distinction between a tree and a machine has always seemed false to me.
It seems that a tree and a machine are distinct because the first is a natural product and the second is a product which appeared by the intermediation of human intelligence.
But, in reality, every product is mediated.
The tree appears through its seed, the machine through intelligence.

And intelligence is just as much an element of reality as a seed.
When we allow that the tree rises out of the seed and the machine out of the mind, we have reduced everything to material terms and have established the equal rights of matter.
( Fernando Pessoa )

Life is far too short to let anybody take a moment of it from you.
Standing up for yourself, in whatever way you do it, is to make the most of your own, dear, precious life.

The surest path to happiness is in losing yourself in a cause greater than yourself.

If science is to bring happiness and real progress to the world, it needs the warmth of man’s heart just as much as the cold inquisitiveness of his brain.
( Franz Winkler )

Airports have seen more loving kisses than wedding halls.
And more prayers are said in hospitals than in churches.

The place to be happy is here.
The time to be happy is now.
The way to be happy is to make others so.

Religion is, in reality, living.
Our religion is not what we profess, or what we say, or what we proclaim.
Our religion is what we do, what we desire, what we seek, what we dream about, what we fantasize, what we think, all these things, twenty-four hours a day.
One’s religion, then, is one’s life, not merely the ideal life but the life as it is actually lived.
( Jack D. Forbes )

There are two kinds of souls who spoil our lives on this earth.
Those who do bad things and those who let them.

To find happiness you must be willing to ignore what life owes you and think about what you owe life.

You are truly blessed if you are able to spend your whole life with the person you love.
( Rose Winfold )

The surest way to have happiness and peace of mind is to give them to somebody else.

The people who stay quiet, who take it on the chin, who don’t like to interfere and who tell you with pride that they know how to mind their own business, always like to think they are keeping the peace.
All they are really doing is wasting their time, and wasting our time.

Life is a dream for the wise, a game for the fool, a comedy for the rich, a tragedy for the poor.
( Sholem Aleichem )

The man who gets along in the world is the one who can look cheerful and happy when he isn’t.

The wicked are like dust that the wind blows away.
The wicked will not stand in the judgement, nor sinners in the assembly of the righteous.
For the Lord watches over the way of the righteous, but the way of the wicked will perish.

All of us have a path to follow and the path begins on earth.
( Richard Matheson )

You will stay young as long as you learn, form new habits and don’t mind being contradicted.

Speak not against anyone whose burden you have not weighed yourself.

The answers to our questioning mind,
For Faith in things we cannot see,
Requires a child’s simplicity.
( Helen Steiner Rice )

Determine that the thing can and shall be done, and then we shall find the way.

One of the most dangerous forms of human error is forgetting what one is trying to achieve.

Without shedding of blood there is no anything.
Everything, it seems to me, has to be purchased by self-sacrifice.
Our race has marked every step of its painful ascent with blood.
And now torrents of it must flow again.
I don’t think the war has been sent as a punishment for sin.
I think it is the price humanity must pay for some blessing.
Some advance great enough to be worth the price which we may not live to see but which our children’s children will inherit.
( L.M. Montgomery )

Never travel to seek contentment.
For it lies within.

The difference between the impossible and the possible lies in a person’s determination.

Not enjoyment, and not sorrow, is our destined end or way.
But to act, that each tomorrow, find us farther than today.
( Henry Wadsworth Longfellow )

We go to work to earn money to buy food and to pay for a place to sleep, so that we can keep living to go back to do more work.
( Rose Winfold )

Knowing there is no hope can give one the courage to fight and win.

The real art of conversation is not only to say the right thing in the right place, but to leave unsaid the wrong thing at the tempting moment.

Life never gives us what we want at the moment that we consider appropriate.
( E.M. Forster )

How quick and rushing life can sometimes seem, when at the same time it’s so slow and sweet and everlasting.
( Graham Swift )

The sun, with all those planets revolving around it and dependent on it, can still ripen a bunch of grapes as if it had nothing else in the universe to do.

The reason people blame things on previous generations is that there’s only one other choice.

Acting as anyone other than yourself merely brings you pain and makes you appear ashamed of who and what you are.
( Gena Showalter )

Look into the confusing mess of life and see things for what they really are.
( Suzanne Collins )

There are two types of people.
Those who come into a room and say,  “Well, here I am.”
And those who come in and say,  “Ah, there you are.”

Nothing can keep an argument going like two persons who aren’t sure what they’re arguing about.

There’s so much stuff out there that you have to do something to deal with it.
( Ned Vizzini )

Everyone Makes Mistakes.
There is nothing at all wrong with making mistakes.
Everyone makes mistakes.
No one can be right all the time.

Give yourself strength by being prepared to admit that you were wrong when you do make mistakes which are your fault.
If you accept challenges, take risks and live your life to the full.
Occasionally your judgement will be wrong.
Sometimes other people will let you down.
Some errors may be entirely your fault.
Some will be other peoples’ fault.

Most will be a mixture.
Making a mistake is a weakness and you should naturally try to make as few as possible.
But admitting that you have made a mistake is a sign of strength and courage.
Apologising for your mistakes is a sign of maturity.
And learning from your mistakes is a sign of real wisdom.

Mastering others is strength.
Mastering yourself is true power.

( Lao Tzu )

Good things don’t just happen.
We must prepare ourselves to grasp opportunity when it comes our way.

That is what life is.
A chain reaction of individuals colliding with others and influencing their lives without realising it.
A decision that seems minuscule to you, may be monumental to the fate of the world.

( J.D. Stroube )

A lot of people have gone further than they thought they could because someone else thought they could.
( Zig Ziglar )

Be not rash with your mouth, nor let your heart be hasty to utter a word before God.
For God is in Heaven and you upon Earth.
Therefore let your words be few.

If that which you seek you do not find within yourself, you will not find it.

To every problem, there is a most simple solution.
( Agatha Christie )

I have already settled it for myself so flattery and criticism go down the same drain and I am quite free.
( Georgia O’Keeffe )

What a wonderful life I’ve had.
I only wish I’d realised it sooner.

( Colette )

Even if it’s absurd to think you can change things, it’s even more absurd to believe that it is foolish and unimportant to try.
( Peter C. Newman )

I do not believe in taking the right decision.
I take a decision and make it right.

( Muhammad Ali Jinnah )

One of the best ways for some people to make others happy is to shut up and go home.

Actions and decisions always have consequences.

No one has the right to point their finger at their past and blame it for what they are today.
And no one has the right to point their finger at someone else and blame that person for how they treat others today.

( Rose Winfold )

Some people are a part of our history, but are not a part of our destiny.
( Dion Felsrow )

Speak your words quietly and clearly.

And listen to others carefully.
( Len Firswood )

There is nothing frightening in the dark if you just face it.
( L.J. Smith )

All men are created equal.
It is what you do from there that makes the difference.

We are all free agents in life.
We make our own decisions.
We control our own destiny.

Gossip is just a tool to distract people who have nothing better to do from feeling jealous of those few of us still remaining with noble hearts.
( Anna Godbersen )

People have only as much liberty as they have the intelligence to want and the courage to take.
( Emma Goldman )

You will meet it, if you have to, with the same weapons of reason which today arm you against the present.

( Marcus Aurelius )

Be not angry that you cannot make others as you wish them to be, since you cannot make yourself as you wish to be.
( Thomas a Kempis )

It is a very natural human trait to destroy that which frightens us.
( Laurell K. Hamilton )

Remember that there is no happiness in having or in getting, but only in giving.
Reach out. Share. Smile. Hug.
Happiness is a perfume you cannot pour on others without getting a few drops on yourself.

( Og Mandino )

If we’re looking for the source of our troubles, we shouldn’t test people for drugs.
We should test them for stupidity, ignorance, greed and love of power.
( P J O’Rourke )
