If anyone spends almost the whole day in reading they gradually lose the capacity for thinking.
This is the case with many learned persons.
They have read themselves stupid.

( Arthur Schopenhauer )

Some decisions will affect the next few minutes, others may have a huge impact on the rest of your life.
Sometimes any decision is better than none.
If you dither too long, your options may shrink and the decision may be made for you.

Sometimes our lives need to be shaken up and rearranged so we can relocate to where we are meant to be.

I believe in the hands that work, in the brains that think, and in the hearts that love.
I believe in sunshine, fresh air, friendship, calm sleep, beautiful thoughts.
( Elbert Hubbard )

Through the door of memory the past you can renew.
A secret world that nobody can take away from you.

Many people think they’re charitable if they give away their old clothes and things they don’t want.
( Rose Winfold )

There are people who make things happen.
People who watch things happen.
And people who didn’t know anything did happen.

When you have to make a decision and you don’t make it, that is a decision.

True friendship is like sound health.
The value of it is seldom known until it is lost.

Not the least of the torments which plague our existence is the constant pressure of time, which never lets us so much as draw breath but pursues us all like a taskmaster with a whip.
It ceases to persecute only him it has delivered over to boredom.
( Arthur Schopenhauer )

It’s sometimes best to keep your mind to yourself and tell your tale to the wind.

No Death Is The Same ..
But anyone who has experienced a loved one’s death will recognise this.
The difference between a living person and a dead person is that a living person travels with you while a dead person is constantly moving further into the distance.
It does not matter how old or sick or disabled the living person is, they are with you and all their past lives and petty triumphs and tragedies are with you in the package that is them.
But a dead person immediately starts to travel away from you like a car turning out of the drive and heading off slowly down a road.

Virtue is so praiseworthy that wicked people practise it from self-interest.
( Luc de Clapiers de Vauvenargues )

Some people know good manners but use but a few.

Don’t allow people who do little or nothing for you control your thoughts or emotions.

Many a friendship has been wrecked,
Through gossip unfounded and unchecked.

The result is that much reading robs the mind of all elasticity, as the continual pressure of a weight does a spring, and that the surest way of never having any thoughts of your own is to pick up a book every time you have a free moment.
( Arthur Schopenhauer )

In this day and age – with the fast pace of life and all the endless possibilities that we can use to satisfy our senses – we forget, or at least put to the back of our minds, any thoughts of spirituality or mortality and about what may happen after life.

Life is a rich mixture of good times and bad times,
And it is being able to deal with both that produces good human beings.

We are living in a period of time in which the biggest threat to humanity, to all creatures, and to the Earth as we know it, might well be ourselves.

Our precious souls recognise each other by the way we feel, not by the way we look.
( Eileen Hutchison, 1926-2008 )

The error of one moment can become the sorrow of a whole life.

If you knew how many years of living lay ahead,
You would treasure every pleasure. If you knew.

Every day of my life, I meet with some fresh surprise.
People will do and say anything, and except for a few things, nothing is sacred.

We are too inattentive or too much occupied with ourselves to understand each other.
( Luc de Clapiers de Vauvenargues )

Man’s inhumanity to man makes countless thousands mourn.

The only thing I regret about my past is the length of it.
If I had to live my life again I’d make all the same mistakes, only sooner.

One of the greatest victories you can gain over someone is to beat them with respect and politeness.
( Alfred Hookins, 1892-1956 )

Growing old is like being increasingly penalised for a crime you haven’t committed.

The only thing which makes it possible to regard this world we live in without disgust is the beauty which now and then men create out of chaos.

Oh Lord, grant that we may not despise our rulers.
And grant, oh Lord, that they may not act so we can’t help it.

Decency and respectfulness and empathy is how you treat those who can do nothing for you.
( Rose Winfold )

The best people in the world are those who are kind.
The most beautiful people in the world are those who are kind.

Sensitivity ought to be a strength and it’s an unpleasant world that turns it into a weakness.

A liar is a man who does now know how to deceive, a flatterer one who only deceives fools.
He who knows how to make skilful use of the truth, and understands its eloquence, can alone pride himself in cleverness.
( Luc de Clapiers de Vauvenargues )

It takes a big man to admit when he’s wrong, and an even bigger one to keep his mouth shut when he’s right.

Drag your thoughts away from your troubles.
It’s the healthiest thing a body can do.

Never combat any man’s opinion.
For though you reached the age of Methuselah, you would never have done setting him right upon all the absurd things that he believes.
It is also well to avoid correcting people’s mistakes in conversation, however good your intentions may be.
For it is easy to offend people, and difficult, if not impossible to mend them.
( Arthur Schopenhauer )

Common sense and a sense of humour are the same thing, moving at different speeds.
A sense of humour is just common sense, dancing.

Friends are those rare people who ask how we are and then wait to hear the answer.

Fools do not understand men of intelligence.
( Luc de Clapiers de Vauvenargues )

He that hath knowledge spareth his words.

The only place where success can come before work is in the dictionary.

Our life is to be regarded as a loan received from death, with sleep as the daily interest on this loan.
( Arthur Schopenhauer )

Some people have occasional flashes of silence that make their conversation perfectly delightful.

O Lord, thou knowest how busy I will be this day.
If I forget thee, please do not forget me.

It does not take much strength to do things, but it requires a great deal of strength to decide what to do.
( Elbert Hubbard )

He that loses his honesty, has nothing else to lose.

The world is divided into people who do things.
And people who get the credit.

To free a man from error is to give, not take away.
( Arhtur Schopenhauer )

Each generation imagines itself to be more intelligent than the one that went before it, and wiser than the one that comes after it.

The golden rule is that there are no golden rules.

With kings, nations, and private individuals, the strongest assume to themselves rights over the weakest, and the same rule is followed by animals, by matter, by the elements, so that everything is performed in the universe by violence. And that order which we blame with some appearance of justice is the most universal, most absolute, most unchangeable, and most ancient law of nature.
( Luc de Clapiers de Vauvenargues )

At the end of every day try and forgive everyone.
And go to sleep with a clear conscience and a clean heart.

If it is important to you, you will find a way.
If not, you will find an excuse.

Your words have nothing to do with me.
They just give me an idea of what type of person you are.
( Eileen Hutchison, 1926-2008 )

Always remember that your present situation is not your final destination.
The best is yet to come.

We never know what tomorrow may bring, or what it may take away.

By wisdom wealth is won.
But riches purchased wisdom yet for none.

Wisdom is knowing whether or not to say it.

With an open mind, we can accept that anything is possible.

Be careful how you are talking to yourself because you are listening.
( Lisa M. Hayes )

The actions of a person will tell us everything we need to know about them.

The wind talks.
Silence speaks.
And the heart knows.

May the spirit of peace gently enfold you in its wings, and bring healing to your heart.

There is no failure except in no longer trying.
( Elbert Hubbard )
