The Sooner We Acknowledge That Animals Are Sentient, The Sooner We Will Cease Exploiting Them

A disturbing case in Oregon, U.S., has once again highlighted the dangers of privately run roadside zoos that put profit over the welfare of animals.
The owner of the West Coast Game Park Safari in Bandon has been indicted on 371 charges, including more than 300 counts of animal neglect, after authorities discovered appalling conditions, drugs, and weapons on the property.
An investigation by Oregon State Police found methamphetamine, cocaine, dozens of firearms, and animals suffering from neglect.
More than 300 creatures, including lions, camels, and smaller exotic species, had to be relocated to sanctuaries or rescue facilities.
Tragically, some, including a camel, a chicken, and a kinkajou, were euthanised after veterinarians deemed their suffering too great.
This indictment exposes the dark reality behind facilities that often market themselves as family attractions or “safaris.”
As this case moves through the courts, the hundreds of animals already freed from neglect represent a glimmer of hope.

A Mass Cull Of Foxes And Crows In The UK In Order To Save Curlews? 
The curlew, one of Britain’s most charismatic birds, with its curved beaks and distinctive call, has been disappearing from the countryside, declining by 60% in 25 years.
Dr Ruth Tingay, co-director of the campaign group Wild Justice, said: “Lethal control of some generalist predatory species will not solve the long-term issue of their over-abundance, which is a direct result of the mismanagement of our countryside. The three main long-term issues that need to be addressed include intensive agriculture, where silage-making increases feeding opportunities for carrion crows and reduces the breeding success of curlews; the annual release of up to 60 million non-native pheasants and red-legged partridges, which sustain artificially-high numbers of predators and scavengers; and the illegal killing of birds of prey, including species such as goshawks, which would otherwise limit the populations of mesopredators and scavengers”.

Endangered Mantra Ray Caught in The U.S. And Sold To SeaWorld In Abu Dhabi.
Florida authorities have agreed to review the issuing of special permits allowing companies to capture endangered creatures to sell.
The review comes after a video showed a crew capturing a giant manta ray off a Panama City beach in Florida and pulling it onto their boat.
It was later confirmed that the crew were contractors working for SeaWorld Abu Dhabi to supply an aquarium there, and the company holding the permit was Dynasty Marine Associates, based in Marathon, Florida.
The permit was issued by the Florida fish and wildlife conservation commission (FWC).
The plankton-feeding giant manta ray, the world’s largest ray with a wingspan of up to 26ft, is federally listed as an endangered species, with commercial fishing as its greatest U.S. threat.

Dartmoor National Park Allows Morons To Hunt Wild Animals And Shoot Birds.
Dartmoor National Park is a major tourist attraction, popular with visitors from all over the world. However, many of the hotels and pubs on Dartmoor are deeply enmeshed with the hunting and shooting industry.
Dartmoor is one of England’s most hunted and shot-over pieces of real estate.
Dartmoor is home to many large estates which use their land for hunting and especially bird shooting. One example is the 4,000 acre Blachford Estate owned by hedge fund manager Alexander Darwall. Estates like these breed birds for shooting, releasing them into the countryside every year to be massacred.
Cornwood Shoots, which operates on Blatchford Estates, advertises that customers can take a shot at a massive 250 to 400 birds a day.
Over 50 million pheasants and 11 million partridges are released for shooting each year.
Most of them are bred for the purpose in inhumane factory farm conditions.
The introduction of such an unnatural number of birds (only a fraction of which are shot) into the National Park takes a devastating toll on Dartmoor’s natural environment.

Nature Reserve Holds Raffle – The Winner Gets To Shoot Ducks And Geese.
If anything sums up the disgraceful ‘normalisation’ of killing birds in England, it’s surely the ‘raffle’ that shooting lobbyists BASC (the British Association for Shooting and Conservation) are holding to “win two days’ guided wild-fowling for you and a friend at Lindisfarne National Nature Reserve.”
BASC notes in its sickening promotion that “Lindisfarne is renowned for its remarkable birdlife and breathtaking landscapes.
Recent counts recorded up to 13,000 pink-footed geese and 23,000 wigeon at the site.
In other words, the organisation that grew from ‘wild-fowling’ roots and has rebranded itself as all about ‘conservation’ is fundraising off the back of sending guns into a nature reserve famed for hosting “huge flocks of wintering waterfowl” – to kill ducks and geese.
